How Teachers Can Help End Bullying
- Speak the lingo and know the game!!
- Learn as much as you can about bullying.
- Let your students know that you take bullying very seriously and that bullying is not allowed in your classroom or at the school.
School policies should include:
- No bullying to anyone
- Students who witness bullying should help the students who are bullied
- All students should report bullying that they experience and are witness to
Integrate bullying prevention themes across the curriculum. Teach kindness, respect and compassion for others.
Closely supervise your students and be watchful for possible signs of bullying among students in your class(es)
Take immediate action if you observe or suspect bullying
Provide a Positive Climate
In order to be successful in school and in life, kids need to feel safe both physically and emotionally. School should be a safe space for all kids and teens.
Educators should value students opinions and ideas, and recognize their strengths. Let them know they can count on you.
Teach Kindness, Respect and Compassion
Are you setting the right example? Many students have reported that teachers and coaches use the power of their power position to shame or embarrass students.This is not appropriate behavior.
Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open
Very often bullying occurs in places and times that are minimally supervised. Some kids will have no problem bullying others in the open, explaining that "it's only a joke” Don’t ignore these comments.
Intervene
- Don’t let kids mistreat each other
- Be sure to address every incident
- Send kids a strong message letting them know that this behavior will not be tolerated.
